Scotch Tasting Night
(added June 29, 2005)
Well, we had our monthly Vancouver Pipe Club meeting the other day, and had arranged for a representative from Glenfiddich to come out and give a presentation of Scotch for us. We had a huge turn out (no surprise there) and a really good time. The City Cigar Club members were invited to attend as well, and a large group of them were in attendance.

The Scotch expert talked about the whole process of making Scotch, from the harvest of the barley, malting it, roasting it, making the wort and distilling the whiskey. He explained the differences in Scotches from the different regions, and how the new thing for distillers is to 'finish' to Scotch by storing it for a while at the end of maturation in some way to make it more interesting/smoother or add something to the finished product (ie. Sherry Cask, Port Wood finish etc.). He brought along for sampling 4 bottles from the Glenfiddich range: 12 year old, 15 year old Solera Reserve, 18 year old and 21 Year Old, Havana Reserve. I'm sure you've had the 12 year old (most people have) and it is good, but holy c**p, the 15 year Solera was amazing, and of course, the 21 Havana was pure Ambrosia! The Havana is a 21-year-old Single Malt Scotch, finished in Cuban rum casks. Very nice indeed.

After sampling, there was a bit left in the bottles and I managed to get another 1.5 shot of the 21 year old (I was seated right by the table holding the whiskey's). So all told I grank bout 6.5 shots worths of shtuff.

For all of you that missed it, for shame. And for those that were in attendance, we owe a large debt of gratitude to Doug for arranging the event. Stay tuned for further events in the life of the Vancouver Pipe Club.
