Reflections on our Club
(added June 29, 2005)
It's been a year since a small group of pipe devotees first met and sat together to discuss the possibilities of forming a pipe club here in the lower mainland. Our aim was to keep the club informal as possible and to promote fellowship as well as to share knowledge and to share the joys of the briar. We have come along way since that day. One thing that constantly impresses me is the diversity of our club. We have members of all ages, from students to retirees, from all walks of life, enjoying a common bond. We have members who are just discovering the pleasures of our shared passion and others that have had a lifetime of enjoyment. In our ranks we have some of the most knowledgeable people in the community, from well known dealers and experts to pipe artisans that are certainly making a name for themselves. One of the things that I consider is one of the most rewarding aspects of our club is the sharing of knowledge, the more you learn, the more you enjoy and I am certainly on that learning curve. Each meeting brings a new adventure in pipes, tobaccos, pipe care, accessories and the fellowship that each and everyone brings. Our meetings have featured pipe basics and care, cigar appreciation night, a single malt whisky tasting, a night at a landmark pipe and tobacconist and there are many more events planned. As members of the Vancouver Pipe Club we are beginning to enjoy the benefits discounts at sponsoring pipe and tobacconists in the lower mainland. We have a committee that is dedicated and is working hard grow our club for our membership and it has been an absolute pleasure working with them. As we move into our second year, I look forward to each meeting, the fellowship and meeting new members as well as new and enjoyable events.
I wish you many hours of happy puffing, Doug |
